Howdy Friends,
Today is Wednesday, May 13th, 2020.

Chick Report:🐥
Today is day 15 of our chick incubation. I just turned the eggs this morning. The incubator did not need water. The temperature was just 99 degrees Fahrenheit.  I got a question yesterday from George.  He asked where will the chicks go once they are hatched?  I wish I could keep them. They are so cute but they will go back to the UVM farm.

Today’s problem solver is a story problem about chickens laying eggs.
Two hens laid 8 eggs altogether.  One of the hens laid 3 eggs.  How many eggs did the other hen lay?
Show your thinking in pictures, numbers, or words.
Challenge: If another hen laid 5 eggs, how many would there be altogether

Morning Message #36

Hello Friends,
Today is Tuesday, May 12th, 2020.

Chick Report:🐥
Today is day 14 of our chick incubation. I just turned the eggs this morning.  When I turned them today they felt a little bit heavier!   Why do you think they are feeling heavier? The incubator did need some water. The temperature was just 99 degrees Fahrenheit.

Here is the link to Freckle.  Please look to the 🐓rooster and 🦁 lion for your activities. We are working on adding and subtracting today at your own level.  Last week our class answered over 800 questions...way to go! I have a quick math practice from Mrs. Cody today.  Digit is another way to say number...34 has two digits 3 and 4.  Can you pick a 2 digit number?  Write it down, write it very small, write it very big, and write it very silly.  Please send me pictures of your number.

I have never gone outside to look for a fox but I have gone outside to find birds and other small woodland creatures.  What kinds of creatures do you like to look for when you go outside?

Yesterday we had snow on Mother's Day!  We do not usually get snow this far into spring.  It was such a surprise to wake up to the winter wonderland especially on Saturday.  Here is a fun Mystery Science from my friend Doug The Reason for the SEASONS.  What is your favorite season?  What do you like best about that season?

I have been hearing the spring peepers, otherwise known as the chorus frogs.  I wonder why? Go to a pond and listen, you may hear them too!  There is a pond at the bottom of Hubbard Park if you are looking for one!

Story Problem:
A chicken laid 7 eggs.  A fox came and ate 2 of the eggs.  How many were left?
Are there more or fewer eggs now?  Do we use addition or subtraction for this problem?  What symbol do mathematicians use to show subtraction?  What does take away mean?  Draw a picture and write the equation for this story.

This Sunday is mother's day.  I am so thankful for my mom.  I'm going to make her a card and tell her that I am thankful that she is my mom.  You can make your mom a mother's day card too!  Here is an idea of a note you might want to write inside your card.
