Here is a quick snapshot of week nine:

(Sorry about the delay)

PE:  Last week we practiced passing soccer balls with a partner.  We also played candle tag.  Remember to wear sneakers Monday-Wednesday!

ECO:  We each got our Vermont nature names...you can ask your child what animal name they received.  We collected sticks to tell number stories and make stick numbers.  We had an animal relay using their new nature names.  It was a glorious morning!   We will go to Harrison Field on Tuesday this week.  Please check the weather report for proper gear.  Looks cloudy and 30s.

Science:  Slow science week.  We were very busy assessing the children on the letter recognition, letter sounds and snap words.  Next week we will study all about Turkeys and Thanksgiving!

Math:  We used jelly bean mats to show numbers in the teens (they each got to eat 5 jelly beans/continued from last week).  We practiced counting backwards from 20, place value -teens are 10 plus some more.  We worked on our counting bags and did our first story problem in our blue journals.  We worked on our math menus and window panes.   Goals:  I can count objects up to 20.  I can write numbers up to 20.  I can count to 100.  I can recognize that 11-19 are 10 and some more. I can count backwards from 20.  I can recognize numbers up to 20.

Literacy:   We worked on letter S (snake) and qu (queen also a chicken letter )(how to unlock their sounds and hand writing).  We practiced our snap words with Jack Hartman.   We had our fourth week of small reading groups.  We all read short predictable books and used their reading journals to write about the books they read.  We reviewed our super powers...we are all super readers.  We started reading a chapter book Mercy Watson: Something Wonky this Way Comes. Goals:  I can draw pictures and tell about books I read. I can read high frequency words.  I can use my super reading powers (strategies)to read books.  Heart Words/High Frequency Words: me, am, I, see, like, a, the, and, is, can, go, it, to, we, in, is, at, see

Optional/but highly recommended:  I will send home another snap word list for the kids to work on over Thanksgiving!  I will highlight the snap words that they each know already.  Also, I will send home a letter book for them to practice writing letters over the break.

Next Week’s letters: x, w  Heart Word: in, on

Art/Music:  We learned more about Henri Mattisse.  We used his art to inspire us to draw lines and shapes with oil pastels around our cut small geometric shapes and organic shapes that we made last week.  In music we became zombies, played which instrument is it, and read a story about a piano named Steinway.

Choice Time Options:  We played with legos, cars, animals, brain flakes and magna tiles.  We also had watercolor free paint day.  We also went outside for extra recess!

Recess/Snack:  Please remember to send in rain gear (rain jacket and rain pants)and boots on rainy days.  Please keep sending a quick snack for the kids to enjoy before morning recess.  Eating outside is definitely working out...thank you for being flexible.  Breakfast orders will continue to be sent home at the end of the day for the next day.

November Vacation:  Please remember to send back your families vacation information.  Several of the children have mentioned that people are coming to visit from out of town or that they are traveling.  Please remember the guidelines for cross state travel and quarteening.  I believe the school will call if we do not receive these back.  Karlynn and I are both staying home and no one is visiting from out of state over the holiday.

Thank you so much and have a great week!

Fondly, Dena
