Kinder News December 19th, 2021

  Kinder News 12/19/21

Hello Kinder Families

-We have ECO on Monday, December 20th. Please help your child dress for the weather (high of 31 low of 8).  We should have plenty of fun tomorrow at Harrison with all the new snow!

-On Tuesday, December 21 the kindergarten classes will have a “Day in the Dark” to reinforce learning about day and night, including solstice - the shortest day and longest night of the year!  If you have anything at home that would light up in the dark we would appreciate it if you could send it to school.  Here are some suggestions:

  • Flashlights

  • Glow Sticks

  • Glow in the dark stickers/beads

We will return your items that day. Please label all items sent to school and no headlamps!

-Please email me if you would like your child to bring home their Chromebook for the vacation.  I will send them home on Wednesday for families who would like to use them for Lexia.

Here is a snapshot of the past two weeks: 

-Worked on writing and sounds of letters of all the alphabet and the digraph th

-Blending sounds to make words (CVC words)

-Practice using all 25 kindergarten heart words

-Reading groups worked on letter sounds, heart words, writing in reading journals, and reading guided reading books

-Writing show and tell stories, adding more words, pages and details

-Learned about different celebrations around the world

-Explored Vincent Van Gogh’s Starry Starry Night made our own art inspired Starry Starry Nights

-Our social emotional lesson focused on including others we read the book The Buddy Bench

-Started reading Zoey and Sassafras a chapter book about a little girl who is part scientist and healer of mysterious creatures

-Read many versions of the gingerbread boy, ninja, girl, animal crackers, friends, bear

-Wrote about the month of November “I like . . .

-We ran a gingerbread science experiment and we asked “What would happen if the gingerbread swam across the river?”

-We designed Gingerbread houses and wrote and I can run run from…(sentences)

-We were detectives and went on a heart word hunt

-Earned a gem celebration -Dance Party last Friday…so much fun!

-Counted backwards starting from 20

-Worked on counting to 100 and number formation up to 10 

-Used our math menus during math (gingerbread bump, number order to 20, counting backwards)

-We worked on the meaning of teen numbers for example 13 is 10 and 3 more

-Worked on giving the next number

-Learned how to play “Othello”

-Practiced writing numbers with proper formation

-Used our Chromebooks for Lexia

-Made thank you hearts for the people who keep our classroom clean and safe

-Made a card for one of our friends

-We are adding a new student to our classroom on January 3rd

What is the buddy bench?

What is Zoey nervous about?

What sound does “th” make?

What comes after 29? 32? 101?

Let’s count backwards from 20, or 29?

How might you welcome and help our new classmate?

Kindergarten News November 7th, 2021

Hello Kinder Families

We have ECO on Thursday, November 11th.  Please help your child dress for the weather (high of 50 low of 27),   I will not be at school tomorrow, Monday, November 8th.  The entire kindergarten and first grade team are at a writing conference.  Karlynn and Ms. Diana will be with the kids to help with everything!  I have left them plenty of fun activities.

I will send out a celebration of learning (progress report) on November 19th, 2021. This celebration will inform you of all the wonderful progress your students have made. I look forward to sharing these with you next week.

Here is a snapshot of the past two weeks: 

-Worked on writing and sounds of letters u, p, v, and qu

-Heart words at, and, look, we, me,  I, am, like, see, I, a , the, my

-Reading groups worked on letters, letter sounds, letter formation and reading predictable books

-Learned about hibernation and how animals get ready for winter

-Learned about how basketball was invented

-We put bird seed out for the birds on the way to Harrison Field at Karlynn’s house

-Started having lunch in the classroom listened to the first Dragon’s Masters book

-Had an amazing pumpkin day celebration

-Wrote about the month of October

-We balanced pumpkins, measured pumpkins, bowled with pumpkins, tested pumpkins to see if they sink or swim, read many pumpkin books and so much more

-We were detectives and went on a heart word hunt

-Earned a jem celebration -an extra recess on the upper playground (we will go this week)

-Counted backwards starting from 20

-Worked on counting to 100 and number formation up to 10 

-Used our math menus during math 

-We worked on the meaning of teen numbers for example 13 is 10 and 3 more

-Learned how to play guess my number up to 20 and 50

-Played base 10 memory with a partner

-Practiced writing numbers with proper formation

-Used our Chromebooks for Lexia

-Class learned how to play UNO

-Design haunted houses for our teeny tiny ghosts


We read many books including:

Fantastic Mr. Fox by Roald Dahl

The Legend of Spookley by Joe Troiano

Dragon Masters Rise of the Earth Dragon by Tracey West

Mother Bruce and Hotel Bruce by Ryan T. Higgins

Possible Questions to ask your child:

What game did you play during ECO?

How does Bruce the bear become a mother?

Why is q always with the letter u?

Would you rather walk or run? Why?

Kinder News 5

  Kinder News 10-23-21


We have library class on Tuesday.  Please feel free to send the books early. We also have ECO on Thursday (Sunny low 37 high 58).  

Here is a snapshot of the past two weeks: 

-Worked on writing and sounds of letters n, m, l, u, c, r, s

-Heart words (words we need to know in a snap look for a copy of all kindergarten heart words this week in red folders.  Feel free to find playful ways to learn these words at home.) we, am, go, no, at 

-Reading groups worked on letters, letter sounds, snap words, pointing to the words as they read, and took picture walks, and writing about the story in their literacy journals

-Shopped for books for our reading boxes

-Apple Tree and Pumpkin life Cycles

-We checked on our mouse houses and made nature mobiles

-We painted a picture to go along with Frederick by Leo Leonni “we can all be helpful”

-Chanted/made a Five Little Pumpkin project

-Focused on classroom jobs

-Counted backwards starting from 20

-Worked on counting to 100 and number formation up to 10 

-Used our math menus during math (they get to choose which item on math menu they would like to practice)

-We worked on teen numbers and counting through the teen numbers

-Learned a count by 10s song

-Played base 10 memory with a partner

-Practiced writing numbers with proper formation

-Used our Chromebooks for Lexia

-Had a gem celebration -watched a Curious George Episode

-Earned another gem celebration for next week (Prize volt celebration the kids get to choose a recycled toy to bring home)
