Week 5 Class News:

Here is a quick snapshot of week five:

PE:  Last week we practiced throwing underhand and catching.  We worked on keeping our eye on the ball and getting our hands ready.  Remember to wear sneakers Monday-Wednesday!

ECO:  We found sit spots and received our nature journals.  We collected items from nature and created mandalas.  We will go to Harrison Field on Tuesday this week.  Please check the weather report.  I will bring the kids out even if it is raining.

Science:  We learned about the importance of spiders and about the biggest spider in the world.

Math:  We worked on writing numbers up to 10, made power of ten towers, played base 10 memory, and read the book Ten Black Dots.  We used black dots to make number pictures inspired by Donald Crews.  Goals:  I can count objects up to 10.  I can write numbers up to 10.  I can count to 100.

Literacy:   We worked on letters m (man)and k (kite)(how to unlock their sounds and hand writing).  We had our first small reading groups.  We all read short predictable books and used their reading journals to write about the books they read.  We used highlighter markers to look for heart words in our take and make books.  We sang/chanted the song “There is Starfish Hidden Under My Bed,” learning about compound words and leaving off one part of the word i.e. starfish becomes star or cowboy becomes cow.  We started reading a chapter book Mercy Watson to the Rescue. Goals:  I can draw pictures and tell about books I read. I can read high frequency words.   Heart Words/High Frequency Words: me, am, I, see, like, a, the

Art/Music:  We used crayons and markers to create amazing dot art pumpkins inspired by Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama.  In music we learned how to move our bodies to the rhythm of the music, learned about a new instrument and went on a virtual hike at Lake Elmore.

Choice Time Options:  We played UNO, horse farms, and watercolors.

Mindful:  We had our second gem celebration!  We used go noodle to get our wiggles out and continued using different ways to breath.

Recess:  Please remember to send in rain gear (rain jacket and rain pants)and boots on rainy days.
